camicia da montagna

The first mountain jacket was a shirt.

L'icona dimenticata dell'alpinismo italiano torna alla luce con il nuovo brand Avista: la camicia che ha inventato l'abbigliamento da montagna.

The forgotten icon of Italian mountaineering returns with the new brand Avista: the shirt that invented mountain clothing.

There is one garment that, more than any other, marked the beginning of technical mountain apparel in Italy: the mountaineer’s shirt.

It wasn’t born in a lab, but on the backs of Italian climbers in the 1950s and '60s, who adapted everyday garments to life on the wall. The origins of this product reflect the union between Italian tailoring and mountain functionality: a simple flannel shirt, reinforced with heavy wool, snap buttons, and secure pockets, became an essential tool to face cold, wind, and altitude.

These are the roots from which the Avista brand was born—a bridge between Italian sartorial tradition and outdoor apparel.

The Mountain Climber Shirt by Avista is inspired by this historic icon: a modern reinterpretation of a classic piece of Italian mountaineering. It doesn’t just inherit the legacy of the original—it reimagines it using modern fabrics and technologies to enhance durability, technical performance, and freedom of movement.

Built to last and made to move, the Avista shirt is crafted from natural stretch cotton, offering comfort, breathability, and toughness. A stretch-knit panel runs along the sides and under the arms, providing greater freedom for technical movement, while the Y-shaped sleeve construction ensures total mobility in action.

The build is robust and carefully detailed:

  • Shaped tone-on-tone elbow patches and a structured shoulder yoke enhance durability and form.
  • English-style flat-felled seams provide strength and a clean look.
  • Hand-finished reinforcement stitching at key stress points adds character and resilience.

The references to the original are precise and purposeful: snap buttons, a zippered chest pocket, and a closable collar with a button loop for added protection in changing conditions.

And like every Avista piece, the Mountain Climber Shirt features a signature detail: a buttonhole shaped like a climbing piton, encasing the chest pocket zipper. A small element that expresses the brand’s philosophy—respect for the mountains, care for the product, and passion for design.
